Mastriano: Senate committee to discuss COVID’s impact on service organizations.

SHIPPENSBURG – In order to understand the full impact that COVID-19 and the Governor’s shutdown orders have had on local veterans’ clubs, charitable and service organizations, the Senate Majority Policy Committee is hosting a workshop discussion September 15 at the Shippensburg Legion.

The workshop is being held at the request of State Senator Doug Mastriano (R-33).

“Charitable organizations, such as veterans and non-profit groups, are pillars in our communities and exemplify the virtues of volunteerism,” said Mastriano. “Unfortunately, many of these important clubs have closed their doors because they have been unable to cope with the Governor’s draconian mandates. As state lawmakers, we need to do everything possible to help our clubs rebound from the pandemic. When clubs thrive, so do our communities.”

During Governor Wolf’s business shutdown, many clubs were forced to close, as they were not considered to be “life-sustaining.” Subsequently, with limited opening capacity guidelines from the Wolf administration, many of these organizations continue to struggle economically, as well as with their charitable work.

“It should come as no surprise that many of our local nonprofits including our veterans’ clubs and service organizations have taken a huge financial blow from both the pandemic and the Governor’s shutdown orders,” said Majority Policy Chair Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks). “The Governor’s one-size-fits-all approach has battered employers and employees across the Commonwealth – even in areas where the spread of COVID-19 has been dramatically lower than major urban areas like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The most tragic thing facing our non-profits is that these executive orders have put a huge roadblock between them and their goal to help reinvest in their communities.”

The workshop will take place on Tuesday, September 15 at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to watch the event live on the Majority Policy Committee’s website.
