As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, we honor the leaders who helped shape our nation—including John Langdon, a patriot whose service helped secure America’s independence.
Born in 1741 in New Hampshire, Langdon was a merchant and shipbuilder who used his resources to support the Revolutionary cause. He helped outfit naval vessels, served in the Continental Congress, and later became a signer of the United States Constitution. Langdon also went on to serve as Governor of New Hampshire and as one of the state’s first U.S. Senators, playing an important role in strengthening the young republic.
Like many figures of the founding era, Langdon’s legacy also reflects the difficult realities of his time. Historical records show that he was involved in maritime trade connected to enslaved labor, a reminder of the contradictions that existed even among those who championed liberty.
John Langdon’s life reflects both the courage that helped build our nation and the complexities of the era in which he lived.
As we commemorate America250, we honor the full history of our founders—their achievements, their struggles, and the lessons their lives continue to teach us.
Honoring Our Past. Learning From It. Inspiring Our Future.

April 28, 1758 - James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States and Founding Father, was born in Virginia.
Monroe served as President from 1817 to 1825 during what became known as the “Era of Good Feelings.” He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, a cornerstone of American foreign policy that declared the Western Hemisphere off-limits to further European colonization.
Before becoming President, Monroe served his country as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, a U.S. Senator, Governor of Virginia, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War.
