Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33)
As much as we wish it didn’t, evil exists in this world. Some things can be so dark that we don’t want to believe such atrocities could be committed by our fellow humans. One stark example is what happened Wednesday night in Washington, D.C.
A disturbing antisemitic attack cost an Israeli couple their lives. This horrific act of violence targeted Jews in our nation’s capital. It is a chilling reminder that antisemitism is not a distant or foreign threat – it is here, it is real and it is deadly.
We cannot avert our eyes. We must have the courage to stare evil in the face and commit ourselves to taking the steps that can prevent future acts of hate. The history of antisemitism around the world is heartbreaking and disturbing, but our children must know the ugliness that existed and learn how it became possible so it doesn’t continue.
As we mourn the loss of innocent lives, we are compelled to speak out against the growing tide of hatred that fuels such acts. Antisemitism is on the rise in America and around the world, and too many still fail to understand its roots, its dangers and its consequences.
That is why my Holocaust education bill, Senate Bill 127, must be passed. This legislation would ensure that students across Pennsylvania are taught the history and lessons of the Holocaust – not only to honor the memory of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis, but to understand the enduring threat of antisemitism in all its forms.
Education is our first line of defense against hate. Senate Bill 127 is a vital tool in combating ignorance and ensuring that future generations recognize where hate can lead if left unchecked.
I urge my fellow lawmakers in Harrisburg to take swift action to pass Senate Bill 127. In memory of those murdered in Washington, D.C., and in honor of all who have suffered because of antisemitic violence, let us commit ourselves to teaching the truth, confronting hate and building a future rooted in understanding and justice.
