Mastriano to Host Medal of Honor Service Wednesday

HARRISBURG – Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33) will host a Medal of Honor service Wednesday, March 20, at 10 a.m. in the East Wing Rotunda of the state Capitol, Harrisburg.

The sole living Pennsylvanian who received the Medal of Honor – retired Army Col Walter J. “Joe” Marm Jr. – will deliver the keynote address.

The Congressional Medal of Honor was created during the U.S. Civil War and serves as the country’s highest award for military valor in action. Mastriano, who serves as chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee and is a combat veteran who participated in Operation Desert Storm, is hosting the event to draw attention to Pennsylvania’s Medal of Honor recipients and raise awareness about efforts to designate U.S. Highway 20 as the National Medal of Honor Highway. U.S. Highway 20 runs from Oregon to Massachusetts, cutting across northwestern Pennsylvania.

Other participants will include:

  • Brig. Gen. Terrence Koudelka Jr, director of Pennsylvania Air National Guard joint staff;
  • Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Keith Beebe;
  • Retired U.S. Army Col. Jim Shufelt;
  • Color guard from American Legion Post 272, Linglestown;
  • Reverend Ron Ziegler, Ministry to State.
