HARRISBURG – Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33), chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, will host an event Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m. in the Rotunda of the state Capitol, Harrisburg, where he will honor Pennsylvania military veterans who participated in Operation Desert Storm.
Following the August 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Iraq under former dictator Saddam Hussein, the United States and its allies launched Operation Desert Storm beginning Jan. 17, 1991, to liberate the besieged nation. The initial air assault was followed on Feb. 24 by a ground attack that defeated the Iraqi military in a campaign lasting approximately 100 hours.
Mastriano – a combat veteran who participated in Operation Desert Storm and whose regiment led the attack against the elite Iraqi Republican Guard – will host the event to honor the military veterans who fought to liberate the people of Kuwait from the oppressive Iraqi regime.
In addition to Mastriano, the ceremony will feature Brig. Gen. Laura McHugh, Deputy Adjutant General-Army; other state lawmakers, including military veterans Sen. Tracy Pennycuick (R-24) and Sen. Greg Rothman (R-34); the presenting of the colors by members of American Legion Post 272, Linglestown; and a keynote address by Col. James White, retired Army chaplain.
