In this Update:
Clebe McClary RemarksIt was a great honor to have Clebe and Deanna McClary with us this week on the Senate floor. Clebe is a decorated American hero who served our country with distinction during the Vietnam War. We are deeply grateful, Clebe, for your willingness to address the Senate and share your heartfelt insights. Please take a moment to listen to his inspiring remarks on the Senate floor, linked above. Vietnam Veterans Day ServiceOn Tuesday, March 25, I hosted a Vietnam Veterans Day Service in the Media Center at the State Capitol. Our keynote speaker was 1st Lt. Clebe McClary, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired. Other speakers included:
You can watch the entire service at the above link. Addressing the Senate About Medal of Honor DayThe Medal of Honor is awarded to recognize American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians, and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. View my address to the Senate to commemorate Medal of Honor Day. My Remarks on Senate Bill 9The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, Senate Bill 9, is a fight for justice, equality and common sense. Girls deserve to play on a level playing field. Allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports takes away the chance for them to compete fairly. Watch my remarks on this bill at the link above. Senate Approves My Bill to Help Deceased Veterans’ FamiliesThe Senate unanimously passed my bill on Tuesday to connect the families of deceased veterans with available burial benefits. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration. Senate Bill 130 would require licensed funeral directors, funeral entities or cemetery companies to notify the county veterans affairs director of a deceased serviceperson having legal residence in the county. They would also be required to provide the decedent’s family with contact information for the county veterans affairs director, who can guide them through available benefits. Families often aren’t even aware of benefits their veteran earned, so they unnecessarily place too great of a burden on themselves. My bill would help them as they go through some of their most difficult times by connecting them with someone who is familiar with available benefits. Delivering burial benefits is an important part of honoring the men and women who sacrificed so much. My Committee Approved Fire Priority BillsThe Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee this week unanimously approved five measures aimed at supporting fire companies, those becoming firefighters, and first responders’ families. All of the measures move to the full Senate for consideration. The passed bills include:
It is essential that we work with our volunteer fire and EMS companies to the greatest extent possible. They do so much for our communities and the funding that they receive through the Fire and EMS Grant Program goes a long way toward purchasing needed equipment. Learn more and watch the voting meeting here. My Clean Air Preservation Act is Reintroduced as SB 508The Clean Air Preservation Act has been reintroduced for the 2025-26 session. It is now Senate Bill 508 and it has again reached the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee. The Act prohibits solar radiation modification, sunlight reflection methods, cloud seeding and other pollution interventions in our atmosphere within this commonwealth. It also imposes duties and penalties on those who engage in spraying our skies. April Hearings Set on Proposed UGI Gas Rate IncreaseThe Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) will hold five in-person and telephone hearings in early April to gather public input on proposed rate changes by UGI Gas. The commission voted in February to investigate UGI’s proposal to increase its annual operating revenues for natural gas distribution service by $110.4 million (9.7%). Under the proposal, the average bill for a residential customer using 73.7 hundred cubic feet of natural gas per month would increase from $104.47 to $115.74 per month (10.8%). The Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate has more information on the proposed increase here. The PUC lists dates, times and locations of the public hearings and information on how to provide input here. If you can’t take part in a hearing but want to comment, you can find the form to submit a comment here. Youth Invited to Go Fishing on SaturdayPennsylvania’s Mentored Youth Trout Day gives young people early access to the state’s stocked trout waters. This year, it will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Youth anglers need a free Mentored Youth Permit or a Voluntary Youth Fishing License, which can be purchased for $2.97, from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Both are available online or at licensing agents across the state. To participate, youth anglers must be accompanied by a licensed adult angler, which are anglers 16 years of age and older. Adult anglers need a valid Pennsylvania Fishing License and a current Trout Permit. Youth with a license or permit can take a total of two trout (combined species) with a minimum length of seven inches. Adult anglers may not possess trout. March 29 is Vietnam War Veterans DayNine million Americans served during the Vietnam War era and 58,000 gave their lives. Sadly, because many people didn’t view the war favorably, Vietnam War veterans received a cold reception when they returned to American soil. Some were even deeply mistreated. March 29 marks the day in 1973 when the last United States troops left Vietnam. That same day, 591 American prisoners were released and returned to the United States. Let us recognize those who fought valiantly for our freedoms. We are grateful for their courage and sacrifices.
